Description: Intimacy with strangers is the key to Lee
Mingwei's work - intimacy that he
achieves through creating a series of
paradoxes in the gallery setting. He has
cooked and shared meals with guests,
chosen by lottery, in a museum; he has
slept with gallery-goers (who volunteered
for the experience). He has created
personal spaces within galleries, such
as a living room' in which participants
could display their personal belongings,
or booths in which people could write
love-letters. He also asks local people to
give him a personal tour of the city, or to
record their relationships with the sites.

The exhibition becomes a
communication interface; objects are
displayed not as works, but as media.
Most of Lee's projects work with one-to-
one communication, usually involving the
artist himself and a particular individual.
The intimacy of these strangers is
instant, but well prepared for and
anticipated. The publicness of the
exhibition setting is used for highly
personal and private purposes. Trust and
faith are tested; slowness ensures the
intensity of the experience. The past and
the future are brought together for a brief
encounter. Lee often adapts existing
forms of religious dialogue and
transforms them into serene and open
scenarios in which participants with
different cultural backgrounds can
exchange their thoughts, feelings,
memories, or even jokes.
