Description:
Richard Cuerden's The Mechanics of Performance uses his own dance skills and personal background as a performer. The simple structure of repeated action, in this video, evokes a world of rigorous discipline and routine, where perfection is the norm. At first aggressive and assertive, an almost hypnotic, trance-like effect is created by the soundtrack of tapping feet. Any expectation of continuity is broken, however, with a jump and lift-off that suspends time and reinforces the break between expectation and result.
